Fantasia is not a so much a movie masterpiece as it is a series of shorter movie masterpiece joined together by the common thread of classical music.1 This groundbreaking movie started out as a short film called The Sorcerer's Apprentice which starred a redesigned Mickey Mouse with more weight and expression.1 The Sorcerer's Apprentice was an extremely ambitious piece of animation art that paid great attention to every detail related to character animation, pacing, color styling and special effects.1
Because Disney had concerns that The Sorcerer's Apprentice wouldn't be profitable on its own, more short animated movies set to music were created to form the full length movie Fantasia.1 The finished movie includes everything from a highly original look at musical instruments in Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, to the heart pounding magic of The Sorcerer's Apprentice the hilarity of hippos in tutus in Dance of the Hours to the scary buy ultimately inspiring Night on Bald Mountain piece.1 The wonderful thing about Fantasia is that you can enjoy the movie as a whole or just sit in awe of the imagination and skill that went into your favorite animated piece. |
